$10,000 found

$10000 Found by 10-Year-Old Boy in a drawer at a Kansas City hotel

Curious kids might sometimes find items left behind by previous guests in hotel rooms, but Tyler Schaefer never expected to find $10,000 in a drawer at a Kansas City hotel, KMBC-TV reported.

"He's one of those kids that likes to look for stuff," said Cody Schaefer, Tyler's father.

He said his family stayed at the Hilton Airport Hotel last weekend on their way back home to South Dakota.

Cody Schaefer said his son likes to search every inch of a hotel room.

"We just let him open all the drawers and he's like, 'Oh look! I found some money,' and we're like, 'Yeah, OK,'" he said. "He pulled it out of the drawer and it was a bunch of money."

"I didn't know if it was real," Tyler said. "I showed it to my dad and he said it was real."

Tyler said he was shocked.

The family members thought about what to do, including whether they should keep it. They decided to pass the cash on to two police officers who were working at the hotel.

Police said no one has called the hotel to claim the money, something they consider suspicious. They said the money was all in $100 bills, but they weren't in serial number sequence.

"I actually think that there's something a little hinky going on," said Sgt. Randy Francis of the Kansas City Police Department.
